Books I like

Ringworld - Larry NIven

One of the first SF novels which look beyond space ships and planets as an allegory for sea ships and countries. Niven throws together a bunch of totally new ideas

Anathem - Neal Stephenson

Cryptomonimicon - Neal Stephenson

There will be Time - Poul Anderson

Footfall - Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle

The Peripheral - William Gibson

The Starcrossed - Ben Bova

This is satire about science fiction and television. Bova and Harlan Ellison are both characters in this book (with different names). A good writer creates a TV series only to see it destroyed by producers, actors and media executives. Its a great, short, hilarious book.

Friday - Robert Heinlein

Heinlein had a go at cyberpunk around the same time that Neuromancer and Blade Runner came out. He does a great job too. This book pre-dates Distraction (Bruce Sterling) and Show Crash (Neal Stephenson) in describing the break up of the USA.
